Furget Me Not
The Furget Me Not campaign is aimed at stopping the illegal killing of otters for the fur trade. The first area they are concentrating on is Cambodia, where Asian Small-Clawed Otters, Smooth Coated Otters and the incredibly rare Hairy-Nosed Otter are being killed illegally for pelts, which are traded by middle men to China. The original trappers are fishermen for whom the money for the skins plays an important part in keeping their families alive, so the campaign aims to find a way to reconcile the survival of both otters and people.
Red Wolf Coalition
We raise money to help the Red Wolf Coalition save Red Wolves in the U.S. There are fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild. Threats to the red wolf include: habitat loss due to development, negative attitudes towards the species, severe weather, road casualties, illegal killings & inter-breeding between coyote & red wolf populations.
European Polecat Breeding Programme
We have joined the European Polecat Breeding Programme helping this scarce mustelid, driven to the brink of extinction in Britain, back to its former glory. A unique pair have been selected, with a view to release their kits back into the wild. We also plan to continue with our existing pine marten breeding programme, water vole surveying & bird & bat on-site habitat restoration.
Pygmy Slow Loris
In February 2008, we joined the EEP breeding programme for Pygmy Slow Loris. This species is vulnerable in the wild facing threats including: illegal hunting for national & international trading of animals & their parts for traditional medicine, decoration & food. By breeding this species in zoos, a gene pool is secured should the species become extinct in the wild.
21 st Century Tiger
We raise money & spread awareness for 21 st Century Tiger to help save wild tigers from threats such as illegal poaching & habitat loss. It is predicted tigers could become extinct within 20 years! An annual Tiger Party Day is held at the park on 4th August where children can have lots of tiger fun!
World Land Trust
We have pledged £6,000 to help save the Atlantic Rainforest through the World Land Trust. Just 7% of the original 330 million acres remain in this area. The Atlantic rainforest is now considered one of the most endangered eco-regions in the world.
Madagascar Fauna Group
We raise money for the Madagascar Fauna Group to help save its flora and fauna. The main threats include: habitat alteration & degradation, habitat loss, pollution, hunting, bush meat, introduced species & trade. Forests are removed to clear space for rice-growing, zebu production, charcoal burning & mining.
Hedgehog Re-hab Programme
Staff are busy every winter rescuing & over-wintering underweight hedgehogs. The Hedgehog Re-hab Programme is the only one in the area catering for the over-whelming number received every year. A hedgehog clinic in the centre of the Native Species area has been built specifically for this cause. All hedgehogs are released back into the wild.
