Tiger Day 2008
A ROARING SUCCESS!
Amba, Shepreth Wildlife Park's resident female tiger, celebrated her 10 th birthday on 4 th August, in style this year. The fabulous party helped to raise over £7,500 to date, in aid of the tiger conservation charity - 21 st Century Tiger.
This event attracted the largest ever turnout for the event and the park in 24 years with the daily visitor levels at an all time high – all to celebrate Amba's 10 th !
The day delivered an astounding array of events including face and nail painting, a bouncy castle, tiger balloons with thanks to Best Balloons, arts & crafts corner, coconut shy, cake decorating, ‘Buttons' The Clown and Dean the puppeteer as well as lots of competitions and quizzes. All of Amba's friends including: the Cambridge Fire Safety Team; park mascot ‘Ringo the Coati' and Paradise Wildlife Park's walking Tiger mascot also joined ex-footballer Jeff Stapleton and international weather presenter Everton Fox, who were all on hand to enjoy the fun and games throughout the day. Raring to Go, Hamilton Photography Studio, local artist Lanie Sweetman, Premiership footballer Luke Chadwick and Hillarys wholesalers all donated excellent prizes to raise funds.
Cambridge United Football Club supported the event under its banner ‘The Amber Army' by providing footballs for the tiger enclosure for play and generously donating free tickets for 2 adults and 2 children to a any league fixture in the 2008-09 season.
Rebecca Willers, Animal Collection Manager, will be celebrating Rana's 10 th by raising further funds in a Swimathon on his birthday at Royston Leisure Centre. If you would like to sponsor this event please go to www.justgiving.com/savetigers.
On the day professional photographer, Paul Sargeant wandered the event taking candid images of the fun enjoyed by visitors. All the pictures taken have been uploaded onto a website www.paulsargeantphotography.co.uk and are available for purchase with all money raised going straight to the tiger fund. If you were there on the day - please check to see if you've been captured on camera!
Organiser, Rebecca Willers says, “I have been overwhelmed with the incredible success this year's event afforded. Many people gave up their day to work tirelessly all day long to raise funds and keep the fun in motion. I was amazed to see the most visitors ever on the park that day proving that the tiger's here are a really popular attraction and people really do care about their plight in the wild. It was just fantastic to see so many people donating to the 21 st Century Tiger charity, which raised on the day over £1000, which I hope to double with the funds from my swimathon in September.”
It is predicted tigers will be extinct in the wild in just 20 years if nothing is done to save them!
